       Project Name:Social Values Survey
       Start Date:01-09-2009End Date:31-08-2010
Description:In collaboration with the Eastern Michigan University, ICOD is conducting a second national social values survey for Lebanon.

The Survey consists of conducting detailed face-to-face interviews all over Lebanon. The local researchers will conduct on-site surveys with three thousand respondents who will each get the chance to answer over 200 questions and point out to his/her own social values and preferences.
Activities:The survey will be based on probability sampling theory. This means that we will choose each sampling unit that has a known and non-zero probability of selection into the sample, and that random chance will be the controlling factor in the selection of the sampling units.
The survey will cover all six Lebanese governorates by targeting a gender balanced and a proportion to the size of the governorates sample. The sample will be represented with (30%) from Beirut, (20%) from Mount Lebanon, (20%) from the North, (10%) from Biqqa, and (20%) from the South and Nabatieth.
Objectives:The Survey is an academic project that will be used to assess the state of socio-cultural, moral, religious and political values of seven countries in the region including Lebanon. The results will contribute to further analysis and comprehension of human social behavior and hopefully to the development of more focused programs and strategies aimed at improving social life and interaction and mitigating conflicts and violence.
Partnership:Eastern Michigan University, The University of Michigan and professors from the American University of Beirut.

Project Name:The Common Ground Film Festival
       Start Date:01-09-2009End Date:31-12-2009
Description:The film festival is part of an ongoing program that aims at instilling a culture of dialogue characterized by listening and problem-solving skills in the leaders of tomorrow. . Productions in the festival take a balanced approach and emphasize the common humanity shared by people in conflict. They reveal why adversaries think, feel, and act as they do - stressing the commonalities among peoples, without ignoring the differences that divide them in order to build a future based on a common understanding and equality.
Activities:This year, the film festival will take place in 12 schools and 8 universities all over Lebanon over a period of 2 days in each school/university. 3 movies will be screened during each day (jointly the screening of the movies would not be more than 2 hours long). Following each movie there will be a moderated discussion to promote understanding of the issues in an attempt to produce effective dialogue, avoid stereotyping and move a step further when it comes to reconciliation. Furthermore, a final event will be organized in the Dowar Al Shams Theater in Shiyah in December.
Objectives:The annual Common Ground Film Festival (CGFF) was launched in 2001 to showcase films that:
* focus on individuals who are working to make a difference in their community
* show inspiring stories of reconciliation between former enemies
* promote understanding of the issues and people involved
* give audiences a broader context for these issues
Partnership:This project is in collaboration with the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies and is in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
Other partners include:Forum for Development Culture and Dialogue (FDCD), Hariri Foundation, and the Arab Group for Christian Muslim Dialogue (AGCMD).

Project Name:Information and Media Literacy (IML)
       Start Date:25-08-2009End Date:Unlimited Period
Description:Information and Media Literacy (IML) as a method of fostering critical thinking and media awareness is already incorporated in school curricula around the world, but remains completely absent from the Lebanese educational system. Students study philosophy, literature, translation and history (amongst other subjects), while no initiatives for media or new information technologies are offered to students at any grade level. Rather than creating a new subject to teach this important material, media literacy should be integrated into existing subjects. “Media literacy is not a new subject to teach; but a new way to teach all subjects.
Activities:Training workshops will be conducted for teachers (in English, Arabic, and French) to train them in specific elements of the program. In addition special workshops and presentations by our trainers will be given directly to students, especially regarding the participatory elements of the program (such as participation on the website, and creating articles for the student training newspaper, presented in the next section).

The IML workshops and curriculum teach practical, current, and hands-on media skills in order to introduce students to IML and to the development, history, and nature of mass media. The syllabus for the IML workshop will be based on the 5 core concepts developed by the Center for Media Literacy, adapted to the Lebanese media spectrum. The Lebanese media will be our main source of documentation and case study examples (articles, archives, selected cuts from TV prime news, radio talk shows, etc) will be analyzed, along with teachers and their students.
Objectives:Information and media literacy (IML) aims to transform the process of media consumption from a passive one-way process into an active and critical process. After such training and adopting such practices, students will better understand the role of mass media and participatory media in constructing views of reality. IML provides tools to help students critically analyze messages to detect propaganda, censorship, and bias in news and public affairs programming, and to understand how structural features, such as media ownership, or its funding, affect the information presented.
